Crawl Space Insurance Coverage Checker

Insurance usually turns on one question: what caused the damage, and was it sudden? Answer 8 questions to see whether your situation is likely, possibly or unlikely to be covered, and what to ask your insurer.

General information, not insurance advice. Policies differ. Read your policy and call your insurer or agent to confirm what is covered.

1. What caused the water or damage in your crawl space?
2. Did the damage happen suddenly or build up over time?
3. Do you have a separate flood insurance policy (NFIP or private)?

Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood. Flood insurance is a separate policy.

4. Does your policy include water or sewer backup coverage (an endorsement or rider)?
5. Was the problem linked to maintenance, such as a known leak left unrepaired, clogged gutters or an old, worn-out liner?
6. Is mold part of the damage?
7. How quickly did you act after you discovered it?
8. What work are you hoping insurance will pay for?

How this tool works

The checker applies general rules that the Insurance Information Institute describes for standard homeowners policies. Sudden and accidental water damage, such as a burst pipe, is the kind of loss these policies are designed for, so it scores "likely". Damage that builds up over time from seepage, humidity or a neglected leak is usually treated as maintenance and scores "unlikely". Flood damage is excluded from homeowners policies and needs a separate flood policy. Sewer backup usually needs its own endorsement. Mold is generally covered only when it results from a covered event, and many policies cap mold payouts. Waiting to act, or upgrades like encapsulation, lower the odds.

Your result is a starting point for a conversation with your insurer, not a prediction of any claim decision. If water is still present, check the moisture and mold risk checker for safety steps, and see what crawl space waterproofing involves.
